Edward Kenway is a man driven by money, he'll gladly use his Assassin skills just for the greed of it. His piracy change his outlooks to something more selfish in a way he is aware of, but cares little for. It is almost always that he barely takes being an Assassin seriously despite wearing the robes of it. Edward is more of a pirate than an Assassin who has morals and mercy, Edward does not.
